This is St. Paul’s Chapel. It is on Broadway in Lower Manhattan. It was built in 1766.
George Washington worshiped there on Inauguration Day, April 30, 1789, and attended services at St. Paul’s during the two years New York City was the country’s capital.
On September 11, St. Paul’s Chapel—just yards away from where building 5 of the World Trade Center stood. It survived unscathed. Strategically placed near what was now known as “Ground Zero,” St. Paul’s began functioning as a haven for the emergency crews and anyone else in need during those first terrible days.
